Biography

Associate member of The Royal Photographic Society and British Institute of Professional Photographers.

Giles Penfound is an award winning photographer. In 1999 he collected the highly competitive Press Photographer of The Year Award. He received further photographic distinction in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Giles has been a professional photographer since 1993. His considerable experience in the world of photojournalism and documentary photography has produced world famous and applauded images – appearing in most national and international newspapers and magazines. His photograph of Lt Col Tim Collins delivering his world renowned speech during the Iraq conflict in 2003 has become an image of global historical importance – reflecting the modern British Army in its finest hour.

Giles was the Chief Press Photographer for the British Army for many years – his work taking him all over the world to all major war zones and conflicts. As a trusted and respected photographer he also provided training and photographic support to Her Majesties Special Forces. During his time in war zones Giles had to display sensitivity and immense compassion for his subjects – whilst producing some of the world famous images used to tell an often horrific story of human suffering.

Back home his duties included exclusive access to HRH Prince William and Prince Harry during initial officer selection to their regiments. The photographs that Giles took spanned the world.

In recent years Giles has exhibited his work to much acclaim and has guest presented at the National Portrait Gallery on his work as a war photographer. He has also published limited edition books of his documentary work.

Giles has a 1st Class Honours Degree from Wolverhampton University and has trained under the world renowned photographer Patrick Lichfield.
